Twin Cans, 2021
Tin Can, wool
My twin sister moved out a for uni, and I thought of making a telephone device linked together with pieces of wool, each piece represents a mile in between us; she is 75 miles away.

This was an attempt at physicalising the distance between my sister and I in a way that puts across childhood and connection, while also being playfully serious. It was a last ditch hope of trying to realise the situation when my brain couldn't. I enjoyed making it, as tying the knots was therapeutic, however it did leave me wanting a tin can telephone that actually worked, and pieces of string that were of equal size to inhabit the miles they represented more uniformly. The not-workingness of the telephone ended up supporting the meaning of this distance and dip in our communication, so I think the 'Twin Cans' resolved themselves.
